Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go sailing on Pride of Baltimore II?

YES! There are plenty of opportunities for you to sail aboard this beautiful tallship. For instance:

  • Maryland's Pride takes the public on daysails in practically every port she visits. These are 2 1/2 to 3 hour cruises that depart from and return to the same dock. The cost is reasonable, but space is limited and reservations are required. See Daysails for locations, dates, and times.
  • Pride II has room for six Guest Crew for overnight passages between ports of call. Guest Crew members are assigned to a watch and are incorporated into the life of the ship up to their level of interest and ability. They work alongside the professional crew and get a firsthand insight into what it takes to sail a tallship. The costs are reasonable and reservations are required. See Overnight Sails for dates and places.
  • Finally, you may be interested and qualified to sign on as a professional crew member. Only qualified and experienced tallship sailors (men and women) are hired.

How do I become a crew member on Pride of Baltimore II?

Maryland's Pride sails with a complement of 12 professional crew (both men and women). The crew consists of a Captain, who is a member of the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. staff, and 11 contract sailors: First Mate, Second Mate, Bosun, Engineer, Ship's Cook, and 6 deckhands. Contracts generally run for six months. A spring-summer crew signs on in March, and a replacement crew normally changes over in July-August for the rest of the season. In addition a small winter crew is hired to perform maintenance on the ship at her winter berth in Baltimore to get her ready for the next season's sailing. Pride II hires only experienced tallship sailors - generally those who have previously crewed on other tallships. If you are interested in becoming a paid crew member, send a resume and cover letter to:

Captain
c/o Pride of Baltimore II
401 E. Pratt St., Suite 222
Baltimore, MD 21202

In your cover letter describe what you feel you can bring to the ship and her crew to help her fulfill her mission. Applications are accepted year round. Pride II does not take volunteer sailors.

How can I volunteer for Pride of Baltimore II?

Pride of Baltimore, Inc., the nonprofit organization that manages the ship, is always looking for and greatly appreciates volunteers who want to show their pride to the world by volunteering to support the organization. There are many ways to volunteer:

  • The ship frequently uses volunteers during its winter maintenance period, January through March. Volunteers work alongside the crew at their convenience during normal working hours Monday through Friday performing a variety of cosmetic and maintenance tasks.
  • Volunteers are always needed in the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. office for support tasks such as data entry and bulk mailings.
  • Volunteers can be extremely helpful in our office and working on events to help support Pride II's mission.
  • Volunteers can be trained to give historical tours to students/guests while in ports.

Pride II does not take volunteers as sailors aboard the ship during the sailing season.

I am a model boat builder. Can I get the marine architect's plans for Pride of Baltimore II?

Pride of Baltimore, Inc. has a set of builder's plans (6) sheets of ship "model" plans, including the sail plan. They are available for $75 for the package of 6 sheets.  The cost for shipping and handling is additional. Shop online in the Ship’s store, call the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. office at 888-55-PRIDE, or email Pride2@pride2.org, to order.

Our group would like to have the Captain of the ship speak to our group about Pride II and tallships.  Is that possible?

Pride of Baltimore, Inc. tries to accommodate all requests for speakers. A special slide show is available summarizing the highlights of the ship's mission and sailing seasons. If a captain is not available because of the sailing schedule, another knowledgeable staff member may be appropriate. Call the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. office at 888-55-PRIDE to discuss your date and time and specific content interests. Or email us at: Pride2@pride2.org. The Pride representative will bring the projector and slide equipment. We ask that you supply a screen. A stipend of $150, made out to Pride of Baltimore, Inc., is customary.
