ASIA with PRIDE Internet Curriculum Featured in
US Pavilion at World Expo '98 in Lisbon!
Pride Inc.'s ASIA with PRIDE Internet Curriculum has been selected as one of nine
educational projects nationwide to be featured in the Hall of Discovery in the US
Pavilion at World Expo '98. Billed as the "last World Exposition of the 20th
Century," Expo '98 runs from May 22 to September 30, 1998, on a specially
constructed site on the banks of the Targus River in Lisbon, Portugal. The theme
for Expo '98 is "The Oceans: A Heritage for the Future." Over 16 million visitors
from all over the world are expected to visit the bi-annual event during its four
month summer run.
The US is one of 154 nations showing off their best efforts in exploring,
understanding, and preserving the oceans. The US Pavilion is one of the largest
at Expo '98 and engages visitors in a variety of interactive displays designed to
deepen their knowledge and appreciation of the wonders of undersea life.
The Hall of Discovery is the first section of the Pavilion and highlights nine
project from around the US, including ASIA with PRIDE, that are pioneering new
ways of exploring the ocean - and sharing what they learn. From satellites to
submersibles, from laboratories to the Internet,
exhibitors exemplify ways of using new technologies to explore the
underseas world - and exciting students about what they find there.
ASIA with PRIDE is the first exhibit which visitors see upon entering the
pavilion. A turn of the helm on an simulated deck activates a short video about
the ASIA with PRIDE voyage. Engrossing images are matched to the "PRIDE II"
ballad, composed and performed by Baltimore's own Pat O'Brennan. The chorus is
sung in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, the three official languages of Expo
'98, by the Spring Garden Elementary School 5th Grade Chorus, from Hamstead, MD,
Carroll County Public Schools. Tri-lingual placards in the booth describe the
ASIA with PRIDE project, and visitors can take away a "piece of eight" imprinted
with the PRIDE log and web site address. The ASIA with PRIDE project was selected
for inclusion in the US Pavilion because of its combination advanced communication
technologies and the lure of tall ship sailing and exploration.
Passing through the Hall of Discovery, visitors to the US Pavilion view a film,
produced by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, that contains
never-before-seen footage of newly discovered species living in the moonlike
conditions around hyperthermal vents in the ocean floor. Following the film,
visitors move into the Ocean Environment area which is filled with exhibits that
demonstrate the US's capacity for undersea exploration.
In addition to the 154 national exhibits, World Expo '98 itself is world of
excitement, entertainment, and discovery that celebrates Portugal's 500 years as a
center of ocean exploration. Performers from around the world show off national
cultures on seven stages from 10 AM till the wee hours of the morning. Each night
at midnight, a special multimedia show, entitled "Acqua Matrix," combines
state-of-the-art technology and real-time performances on the banks of the Targus.
