Lesson #12

Common Threads

Introduction

Did you ever wonder about the clothes that kids from different countries wear? In this lesson, you will learn more about the clothing styles of people who live in some of the Asian countries that Pride II visited on her tour to Asia. You will compare these clothing styles to American clothing styles, and you'll learn about traditional clothing (ethnic costumes) that are worn on special occasions by people from some of these countries.

To complete this lesson, you will need a copy of the "Clothing Styles of Asia" worksheet, paper, a pencil, colored pencils, and a world map.

Part I

Before you begin this lesson, take a minute to think about the kinds of clothes you like to wear - and the reasons you like to wear them. If you need to, or if your teacher asks you to, jot down some notes or share your ideas with a partner. On Part #1 of your Clothing Styles of Asia worksheet, make a list of some of your favorite clothes to wear, the reasons these clothes are your favorites, and the materials that these clothes are made from.

So what are some of your favorite clothes? Are they your jeans? Your jacket? Your bathing suit? What reasons did you give for choosing these as your favorite clothes? Were they comfortable? In fashion? You bought them with your own money? You might have different reasons for choosing these clothes as your favorite clothes. Did you ever wonder about what kinds of clothes kids in other countries like to wear? What kinds of clothes do you think kids who live in Japan like to wear?

How do you think kids in Japan like to dress? Are you curious about what kinds of clothes kids wear in other Asian countries?

Kids in Japan are interested in what American kids are wearing - and they want American kids to know about what Japanese kids wear. You will be visiting a Web site created by Japanese students. (Remember that English is not their native language, so you might see some spelling mistakes on their Web site.) Use this site to complete the first column on Part #2 of your your Clothing Styles of Asia worksheet - "Modern Japanese Clothing. You will look at the following Web site to find out what modern Japanese clothes look like and what they're made from.

Don't forget that you will have to use the "Back" button on your browser to get back to the "Asia With Pride " Web site.

You will return to this worksheet to complete the second column - "Traditional Japanese Costumes" later in this lesson.
